Google Ads vs Meta Ads: Compare Intent, Cost and Customer Acquisition

Google Search ads reach people expressing a need through a search query. Meta Ads introduce an offer to people using Facebook and Instagram. Choose between them by considering buying behaviour, the strength of your offer and the cost of winning a customer.

The distinction is not absolute. Google also offers visual discovery advertising, while Meta campaigns can reach existing prospects. For planning purposes, however, search demand and product discovery are useful starting points.

Compare the channels against your actual sales process

Decision Google Search Ads Meta Ads
Customer starting point Searching for an answer, product or supplier Encountering your offer while using social platforms
Core campaign input Search intent, relevant copy and landing pages Creative concept, offer and an appropriate destination
Useful business scenario A known service with active local demand A product or service that benefits from demonstration
Commercial check Qualified enquiries or profitable orders Qualified enquiries or profitable orders

When Google Ads deserves the first test

If people already search for exactly what you sell, paid search can be a sensible starting point. A specialist repair business may want to appear when a customer needs a particular repair in Dublin. The advert and landing page should directly address that need.

Check whether enough relevant searches exist and whether the likely click cost fits your acquisition allowance. High intent does not automatically mean affordable customers.

When Meta Ads deserves consideration

If customers need to see a product in use or understand an unfamiliar service, Facebook and Instagram can provide space to explain it. A retailer launching a distinctive gift product may have more to demonstrate than a short text advert can communicate.

The challenge is earning attention and converting it into a meaningful action. Assess whether you can produce credible creative regularly and give interested people the information they need.

Compare customers rather than clicks

Cheap clicks on either platform can be commercially unhelpful. Calculate cost per qualified enquiry and customer acquisition cost using consistent definitions. Account for management fees, creative production and the time your team spends processing unsuitable enquiries.

As an example, 100 clicks generating two suitable enquiries may be less valuable than 40 clicks generating five. The winning channel depends on completed sales and the contribution left after costs.

Use both only when each has a clear role

A combined plan might use Meta to demonstrate an offer and Search to capture later demand. Avoid simply adding each platform’s attributed revenue together: both may claim influence over the same order. Review total business performance and use controlled tests where practical to assess additional value.

Frequently asked questions

Which platform is cheaper?

There is no universal answer. Compare the cost of winning a worthwhile customer, not just the price of a click or impression.

Should a small business split its budget equally?

Only if there is a reason to do so. A limited budget may produce a clearer learning opportunity when focused on one audience, offer and channel first.
