Shopify Product Configurators: Write a Brief That Prevents Order Errors
Share
A Shopify product configurator should help customers choose a valid product and give the business enough information to fulfil it correctly. Start with the decision rules, pricing and production requirements. The visual selector is only one part of the project.
List the choices and their dependencies
Write down every option, which choices are required and which combinations are unavailable. A personalised product might need size, material, colour and text, with certain materials available only in particular sizes. Separate stocked variations from information collected for production. This helps determine whether native product options, an app or custom development is appropriate.
Explain how the price changes
Document fixed supplements, quantity rules and any choices that require a manual quote. The customer should see a clear price or a clear explanation of the quotation process before committing. Test the resulting order totals rather than assuming a price shown in a visual preview will always match the amount charged.
Design the production handover
Specify where custom text, artwork and measurements appear after purchase. Consider character limits, unsupported file types and missing information. If an approval stage is required, define who sends the proof and how production waits for confirmation. A configurator that creates attractive previews but incomplete orders can increase manual work.
Test the awkward combinations
Use a test matrix covering minimum and maximum values, invalid combinations, mobile use and changes made after adding to the basket. Check whether staff can interpret the final order without contacting the customer again. Include fulfilment and integration requirements in acceptance testing, especially where a supplier or workshop receives the order data.
Frequently asked questions
Does every custom product need a bespoke configurator?
No. Straightforward choices may suit standard product options or a suitable app. Custom development is justified by requirements that simpler approaches cannot reliably meet.
Can customers upload artwork?
That can be part of the solution, but file handling, validation, access and the production workflow must be specified and tested.
