WooCommerce to Shopify Migration: What to Audit Before Moving
Share
Before migrating from WooCommerce to Shopify, audit the information and business processes that must survive the move. Products are only one part of the project. Irish retailers also need a plan for search traffic, customer communication, operational integrations and the final handover of orders.
Build a migration inventory
List products, variants, images, collections, content pages and customer records. Identify subscriptions, bundles, trade accounts and custom checkout behaviour separately. Decide which records must be migrated, archived or retained in the previous system. Document the decision with the business owner instead of silently dropping information that appears old.
Map functionality before choosing replacements
For every important plugin, describe the job it performs. A shipping plugin may be responsible for several rules rather than a single delivery price. An accounting connection may transfer discounts, refunds and tax details differently from orders. Use those requirements to assess the Shopify approach, including app costs and any manual work that remains.
Protect useful URLs and content
Export a list of important existing URLs and map each changing address to its closest relevant destination. Keep valuable page copy and product details where they still serve customers. Check links, images and navigation in the new store. Redirect planning reduces avoidable disruption, but no migration can promise unchanged rankings.
Rehearse the changeover
Run a sample import and reconcile product counts, option values and representative customer records. Test an order through payment, stock adjustment, fulfilment and notifications. Agree when source data stops changing and how orders placed during the transition will be handled. Shopify notes that existing customer passwords cannot be migrated, so include account access instructions in the communication plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can everything from WooCommerce move automatically?
No. Data types, plugin features and business rules need individual assessment. Test sample records before agreeing the full migration scope.
Should the old website be deleted after launch?
Do not remove it without an agreed retention and backup plan. Confirm required records, redirects and access arrangements first.
