Shopify Product Images and Alt Text: A Practical Guide
Share
Good Shopify product images explain the item, while useful alt text describes the information an image communicates. Plan a gallery around buying questions rather than simply filling every available image slot. Keep presentation consistent without hiding details a customer needs to judge size, finish or compatibility.
1. Give each image a purpose
Start with a clear overall view, then add the angles and details needed for that product. A bag may need its interior, closure and a meaningful scale reference. A spare part may need connectors, dimensions and the relevant model detail. Use accurate photographs of the actual product and make it clear when an accessory is shown for illustration rather than included.
2. Keep the collection view consistent
Choose an image shape and framing approach that works across the range. Shopify's media guidance notes that images need the same aspect ratio if they are to display at the same size within a collection. Check how the theme crops images on mobile and desktop. Protect important details from automatic cropping rather than assuming the full source image is always visible.
3. Write alt text for the image being shown
Describe the relevant product and distinguishing visual information naturally. For example, a side view might describe a navy leather ankle boot with a brown sole. Do not paste the same list of keywords into every image. If a diagram contains essential measurements, provide those measurements as readable text too, rather than expecting a short alt description to replace a whole table.
4. Review image handling in the buying journey
Check clarity, zoom where available, variant association and loading behaviour on a realistic mobile connection. Large source files do not automatically produce a better shopping experience. Keep originals safely and review changes on a copy or through an agreed workflow. Ensure that replacing an image does not accidentally remove information used by staff or connected sales channels.
An image review for one product
- Can the customer understand shape, finish and scale?
- Does selecting a variant show the appropriate image?
- Is important information available outside the image?
- Does each meaningful image have an accurate, specific description?
Frequently asked questions
Should alt text contain Shopify SEO keywords?
Use words that accurately describe the image. A product name or material may naturally be relevant, but repetitive keyword lists make descriptions less useful.
Can I use only lifestyle images?
Lifestyle images can explain use and context, but customers usually also need clear views of the product itself. Choose a mix suited to the item and its buying questions.
