How to Build a Useful Shopify Size Guide for Fashion Stores
Share
A Shopify size guide should help a customer choose between the sizes you actually sell. It needs clear measurement instructions, accurate product or body measurements and relevant fit notes. A generic conversion table is rarely enough when different brands or styles fit differently.
1. Say what is being measured
Label whether a table contains body measurements or measurements taken from the garment. Explain the units and how the measurement is taken. Chest circumference and a garment's flat chest width are not interchangeable. If customers must double a flat measurement, explain that explicitly or present the information in a format that avoids the calculation.
2. Match the guide to the range
Use the supplier's verified size information where available and check that it applies to the products shown. A fitted shirt, oversized sweatshirt and tailored jacket can create different questions. Add factual notes about cut, stretch and intended fit without inventing advice. For footwear, explain the size system and provide relevant brand guidance rather than suggesting one conversion is universal.
3. Keep the guide beside the decision
Place a clearly labelled size-guide link near the size selector. Make tables readable on a phone, with headings visible and units easy to understand. Important sizing information should not exist only as tiny text inside an image. If diagrams are used, include useful text explanations as well so the guidance remains accessible and searchable.
4. Maintain the guide as products change
Assign responsibility for checking new brands, ranges and updated supplier measurements. Review customer questions and reasons recorded for returns to identify missing information. Test a product that uses the standard guide and one needing an exception. Do not silently reuse a familiar table when the supplier's sizing has changed.
Questions your size guide should answer
- Are these body or product measurements?
- Which unit and size system are being used?
- Does this guide apply to the selected item?
- Where can a customer ask for help if they are between sizes?
Frequently asked questions
Can one size guide cover the whole store?
Only if the ranges genuinely share the same measurements and fit assumptions. Multi-brand stores often need brand-specific or product-specific information.
Will adding a size guide guarantee fewer returns?
No. It can address sizing uncertainty, but product consistency, customer expectations and fulfilment accuracy also matter. Review outcomes rather than assuming an immediate reduction.
